About
Photography has a way of slowing us down, inviting us to notice the beauty, light, and quiet moments that often go unseen.
Welcome! I’m John S Baker, a nature and travel photographer who believes every landscape, bird, and quiet corner of the world has a story waiting to be discovered.
Photography first captured my imagination shortly after college. Although my career in life sciences eventually took center stage, my curiosity about the natural world never disappeared. After retiring, I returned to photography with fresh eyes and a renewed appreciation for the beauty, light, and unexpected moments that surround us.
I’m drawn to places where light, texture, and atmosphere come together to create emotion. Whether I’m photographing a weathered doorway in Portugal, the dramatic landscapes of Glacier National Park, the red rock formations of Sedona, or a colorful songbird in my backyard, I hope my images encourage others to slow down, observe, and discover beauty they might otherwise overlook.
My photography spans wildlife, landscapes, intimate nature, minimalism, pollinators, coastal scenes, and the places I encounter through travel. While some photographs stand on their own, others become part of a larger story. My Photo Essays explore the character and sense of place I encounter during my travels, while Behind the Photograph looks more closely at the experiences, choices, and photographic thinking behind individual images. A curated selection of my photographs is also available as museum-quality fine art giclée prints, created for those who would like to bring these images into their own homes.
My lifelong curiosity has always been about observing, exploring, and discovering. My camera has simply become the tool through which I now share those discoveries with others.
When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll usually find me planning my next adventure, exploring a new national park, or wandering a quiet town in search of interesting architecture, hidden gardens, and the changing light that transforms ordinary scenes into memorable photographs.
Thank you for visiting. I hope these photographs and stories inspire you to look a little closer, travel a little farther, and discover the extraordinary moments that exist in everyday life.
